Asphalt Shingles
Asphalt shingles come in two forms: organic-mat, with a mat made from natural wood-based cellulose fibre saturated in asphalt and then coated with harder asphalt; and fibreglass, with a reinforcing mat of fibreglass coated with asphalt.

Of the two, fibreglass shingles are lighter, thinner and may have a better fire rating; they are the predominantly higher grade of shingle product. Use of the highest available grade of shingles is always recommended and provides the best long-term value.

Shingles are available in a range of colours and styles, including random patterns or replicating the appearance of ceramic tiles, wood shakes, or slate.

Underlayment
The material applied between the wooden roof deck (sheathing) and the exterior shingles is called underlayment and can be as important as the choice of shingle. The best underlayment is an ice-and-water shield membrane. Application is especially important on low-slope areas, around chimneys, vents, and skylights, and at the eaves; proper overlap is essential.

The choice of materials may also include tar paper, a heavy grade of paper impregnated with tar to make it waterproof, and fibreglass base sheet incorporating fibreglass or polyester fleece.
